How to do an Op-Ed:
| People over 85 years old are the fastest growing segment of our population. Half of them require help with personal care. |
What — An op-ed can be similar to a bylined article because an expert or professional in a certain
field may write it. Alternatively, an individual without special credentials who simply has a strong
opinion they wish to share can also write it. Op-eds are run on the editorial opinion pages of newspapers.
The purpose of the op-ed, written by Suzanne Mintz, president and co-founder of NFCA included in the
addendum is to help people understand how much family caregivers do for their loved ones and for society
and why they should practice “Caring Every Day” during NFC Month and all year long.
How — Click here for a sample Op-Ed you can
use, or use the sample as an outline to write one from a local angle. Contact the editorial page editor of
your newspaper to ask about the number of words they require for an op-ed. All papers have simple
specifications for submitting op-eds.
When — Send any time after October 1 because op-eds are placed ahead of time.
Where — Contact your local newspaper’s editorial page for information. You will also find op-ed
requirements on the newspaper’s web site.
